The Odyssey of Joy

It is a time of uncertainty following the war in Kosovo. Eleven-year-old Lis, who lives with his mother, grandmother, older sister, and younger brother in a small apartment, listens to music on his Walkman and helps his family get by in their meager daily life. Since his father isn’t home, his mother insists that he take on responsibility, and Lis is cast in the role of head of the household. When his mother and older sister want to know what’s happening in the country, the boy goes to a neighbour’s house to watch the news. The reports tell of people who have gone missing in the northern parts of the country and a mass grave found there. Shocked, the boy says nothing at home but tries to escape into the world of music. When that doesn’t work, Lis decides to leave home. The boy finds French comedians performing for a group of children. Intrigued, Lis secretly sneaks into the entertainers’ RV. After being discovered along the way, the boy hides behind a false identity he has invented and joins the troupe on their journey through the countryside to bring joy to children. Will Lis find joy for himself as well?
