Lost Stars of the Horoscope

11-year-old Masha carries the heavy burden of an adult on her shoulders. She looks after her mother’s well-being while struggling with her own traumas. War is a constant presence in the family’s daily life: her stepfather is a prisoner of war in Russia, and her 16-year-old older brother is plagued by guilt because he isn’t fighting for his country on the front lines. In the wake of this shocking upheaval in her life, the once-vibrant girl has become withdrawn and feels a strong sense of alienation at school.

Thirteen-year-old Sasha fights against the war by keeping her country’s language and culture alive through her involvement in traditional Ukrainian theater. Sasha doesn’t want to leave Estonia because she fears she’ll lose her roots if she moves again.

Fifteen-year-old Irina attends a Russian-language school, but the Estonian-language entrance exams threaten her ability to continue her education. Her mother is unable to practice her former profession, so she is pursuing her dream of becoming a photographer. Like the other girls, Irina is grappling with her identity.

Feeling their way, the girls search for their place in a world where the future is uncertain and returning home feels like a distant dream. Will the girls retain their Ukrainian identity while speaking Russian or living outside Ukraine?
