Young Yaímita’s long-distance relationship with an older Norwegian man promises an escape from Havana’s harsh daily life and crushing poverty. With the help of her mother, Yaíma, Yaímita sets her sights on Nordic prosperity, but her dreams begin to shatter as the romanticized facade of Norway starts to crack.

Norheimsund is a searingly visceral film about dreams, intergenerational poverty, and what people are willing to do to overcome it. The contrast between Cuba’s harsh everyday reality and the Western consumerist extravaganzas reflected on a smartphone screen makes watching the mother and daughter’s struggle for survival all the more gripping. This harrowing short film by Cuban-American Ana A. Alpízar offers more food for thought—especially for Nordic viewers—than it does answers.
