Ten-year-old Max lives with his mother in a magnificent old castle that serves as a retirement home, where his mother works. The boy's best friends are the elderly residents of table number 7: Vera, Horst, and Kilian. Although Max is bullied at school because he lives in a retirement home, he decides to try out for the school soccer team. When Max is not selected, the residents of the retirement home rally to his support. Horst, an energetic former soccer coach, ends up challenging the school team to a match against the elderly residents. Max is shocked to learn that he will have to play against his bully, Ole, and his friend, Laura.

While preparations for the upcoming soccer match are underway in the castle courtyard during the day, strange things are happening inside the castle at night. Max and his senior friends must find out what or who is tormenting Vera with nighttime noises.
