Moomintroll is sick in bed, and Moominpappa wants to cheer him up by telling him stories about his own adventurous youth. Moominpappa tells how he escaped from an orphanage and met the inventor Hodgkins, on whose ship he, together with his friends, had many wonderful adventures on land, sea and in the air.
